About this course
You will need a grade C or above in both core and additional (or equivalent) Science and Maths to study Physics at this level. Students who do not study Maths at AS or A2 Level alongside Physics will be expected to attend a supplementary support course in Mathematics during the first year which will lead to an additional qualification.

Physics AS/A2
Physics gives you the opportunity to investigate and understand some of the fundamental laws of the universe, ranging from the tiniest particles of matter to vast star systems. You will develop many skills, including use of equations and formulae, problem-solving, experimenting and using technology, and learn about many real-life applications of physical ideas.
What will I study?
The course will cover familiar topics combining traditional approaches and modern developments.
AS: The first year will cover topics such as mechanics, sub-atomic particle physics, electricity and theory of waves. You will develop your practical skills by conducting investigations and making sense of data, use computer simulations to help your understanding.
A2: The second year builds on the skills and knowledge from AS and introduces further detailed topics which include gravitational, electrical and magnetic forces, radioactivity and oscillations.
How will I be assessed?
AS: Exams at the end of year one, including assessment of practical skills, through coursework.
A2: Exams in year two, including assessment of practical skills, through coursework.
What can I do next?
A level Physics is a good starting point for further study of natural science and engineering related courses. It also supports progression into subjects such as medicine and radiography and is a good background for courses in many other fields especially those that rely on numeracy and logical thought.
