Course Summary:
The full-time First Diploma in Exercise and Fitness at Nescot College is a 1-year course aimed at students who have an interest in sport. It is ideal for you if you want to gain a qualification for employment in the sport or the fitness industries, or if you would like to progress on to the National Certificate/Diploma courses.

The course is a mixture of theoretical (class based) and practical sessions (in the gym or sports hall). Activities include lectures, group work, workshops and discussion groups as well as practical sports and coaching sessions. Throughout the course additional activities and qualifications will also be undertaken to make your time on the course enjoyable and varied.

We cater for a wide range of sports including rugby, basketball, tennis, hockey, badminton and women's football. Nescot has a men's football academy and there are also sporting opportunities outside the course as part of our enrichment programme in Basketball and Rugby.

Sporting ability is not a requirement to join this course, but enjoyment of sport is essential.

Course Details:
The course covers 6 units:

Core Units

  • Health, Safety and Injuries in Sport


Specialist Units
  • Planning and Leading Sports Activities
  • Work-based Project in Sport
  • Instructing Exercise and Fitness

All units are assessed individually through assignments, presentations and practical assessment during the course.

Additional Activities and Qualifications
  • FA Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Football, incorporating the FA Emergency Aid Award and Child Protection Certificate, and the option of additional National Governing Body Coaching Awards such as basketball or badminton
  • Sport First Aid Course
  • 2 week work placement in the Sport, Coaching or the Health and Fitness Industry

An additional funding contribution will be required towards the cost of the additional qualifications undertaken should you wish to take them. Costs will be worked out once precise numbers are known.

Career Progression:
Students can progress to the National Certificate/Diploma courses in Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness at NESCOT or seek employment opportunities in the sports coaching, recreation or health and fitness industries.

You will be provided with all the resources and materials needed for your programme. However, we have found in the past that learners purchase additional items and by buying in bulk we can gain a good discount. Therefore additional material fees are expected to be paid at enrolment to cover the following:
  • Department sports kit
  • Core course text book
  • Individual unit trips
  • Level 1 coaching qualification
  • First Aid qualification

Students eligible for EMA should also apply for a Learner Support Grant before the start of the course. The money is allocated generally on a first-come first-served basis.
