Summary:

What will you learn on this course?
  • To research visual ideas that can then be used to inform your textile samples.
  • To explore different textile techniques including weaving , felt-making, hand and machine stitch, printing with silk screen, block, mono, heatpress, papermaking and applique.
  • To experiment with and combine different processes in order to express individual concepts.
  • To research, analyse and respond to the work of artists and textile craftspeople. To incorporate this knowledge in the development of your ideas.
  • To analyse /interpret and evaluate your work.
  • To be aware of ecological issues and environmental concerns.
  • This course DOES NOT include dress making. Aspects of costume are considered and in the second year students may research dress in their personal study as long as the assessment criteria are considered.

One year for AS or two years for a full A Level

There will be a process of continuous assessment linked to projects. In the second year students design their own projects based on individual interests.

Unit 1 AS
Coursework

Unit 2 AS
Exam - 8 hours externally set. At least six weeks preparation time.

Unit 3 A2
A Personal project which researches the work of Artist, Craftsperson or Textile Technique and links this to the development to your own work and ideas.

Unit 4 A2
Exam - 12 hours externally set. At least six weeks preparation time.

Art and Photography are useful if planning an application to Art School which requires a well-balanced portfolio.

What will you need to buy?
You will need to buy a journal to record images, samples, experiments and development of ideas. It is recommended that you have your own basic kit consisting of scissors, needles, threads, fabric scraps, buttons and inspiring fragments.

What could you go on to do at the end of the course?
  • Take a degree course in Textiles, Fashion, Surface Design, Fashion Buyer and Marketing.
  • Seek employment in areas like Fashion retail, Interior Design.
