Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Level 2
Course Level: Level 2 - Further Education equivalent to BTEC First Diploma, GCSE or NVQ2

Introduction
  • A combination of workshop practical work and classroom underpinning knowledge for all light vehicle topics divided between workshops, classroom theory and additional elements. This course is aimed at students that have previously achieved a Motor Vehicle L1 qualification (e.g. City and Guilds 4101 Level 1, City and Guilds 4100 Level 1, ABC Certificate/Diploma Level 1.

What will be covered in the course?
  • *Unit 1 - General 'housekeeping', to maintain an efficient, clean and safe working environment for both people and the customers vehicle. *Unit 2 - Reduce risks to Health and Safety, to ensure a safe working environment for both the individual AND others. Unit 3 - Developing positive working relationships. Unit 14 - Basic routine maintenance, covering the operating principles, and servicing of, a range of vehicle systems (Steering, suspension, brakes, transmission and engines including it's sub-systems such as fuelling, cooling and lubrication). Unit 15 - Removing and replacement of Engine components with a more in depth knowledge element. Unit 16 - Removing and replacement of Electrical components with a more in depth knowledge element. Unit 17 - Removing and replacement of Chassis components with a more in depth knowledge element. Unit 19 - covering pre and post work inspections. Basically determining what work is necessary, diagnostic methods and returning the vehicle to the customer in the state expected and correctly repaired. * APL where applicable

What qualification(s) can be gained?
Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Certificate, Light Vehicle, City and Guilds 4101, Level 2 Key Skills, AON, IT and Communications.

How is the course assessed?
There will be 5 online exams and a series of practical assessments along with a portfolio to build. Introductory Certificate to Engineering assessments are a mix of practical and portfolio assessment. Key Skills assessment depends on level of entry GCSE grades.

  • You will need to provide your own boots and overalls and all necessary equipment for taking notes.

Further information
An Interview is required to join this course. Along with the Motor Vehicle subjects, you will also undertake Key skills in Application of Numbers, I.T and Communications. Solihull College offers full time and part time courses for businesses and residents in Birmingham, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Coventry Warwickshire and the whole of the West Midlands.
This qualification is accepted by the repair industry as the basic mechanic qualification and would be acceptable to gain employment as an Improver.
