Course Description:
Course Content AS Unit 1: Categorising Texts The aim of this unit is to introduce students to methods of exploring and understanding spoken and written language in use. You will be examined on your understanding of the way purposes, audiences and contexts impact upon language production and reception. Students will be required to use linguistic methods to analyse and investigate a variety of texts taken from everyday sources. In addition you will be required to study how spoken and written texts reproduce ideas about cultural values and assumptions, with a key focus on the following topic areas a) Language and Gender b) Language and Power c) Language and Technology Unit 2: Coursework - Creating Texts In this unit you are encouraged to develop your own writing skills. You will produce two pieces of original writing, in different genres and for different audiences and purposes. You will also produce two commentaries which explore the writing process and assess the success of the individual pieces. A2 Unit 3: Developing Language This unit builds on the knowledge and skills developed in AS studies, as well as focussing on two new specific areas of language study: Child Language Acquisition and Language Change. Unit 4: Coursework - Investigating Language In this unit candidates apply their knowledge of linguistic methods and concepts acquired over the course to two separate pieces of writing : a language investigation and an informative media text. Classes make use of a range of interactive approaches including whole group discussions, small group activities and individual feedback on research tasks. Teaching is supported by specially prepared booklets and students are encouraged to develop practical as well as analytical skills.
