Full Time AS Level Religious Studies

Course Description:
Religious Studies is the social study of Religion and Religious practices. It focuses on contemporary issues and encourages students to engage critically. Although it is a traditional subject it carries much relevance to understanding the modern world. Religious Studies is a rigorous A-level, akin to philosophy in its demands and degree of difficulty and is therefore far from being a soft option. Throughout human history religions, of one form or another, have played, and continue to play, a central role in literally billions of people's lives. It covers all the world's major faiths and considers the future of religion, in an increasingly scientific and arguably secular age. Choosing Religious Studies will give students a much better understanding of themselves and the society in which we live. Religious Studies requires students to be logical open minded and analytical in thought.
Course Content
In the first year, you will study AS level Religious Studies, Advanced Subsidiary GCE 1061, which comprises two modules and is half the full A level. In the second year, you will study another two modules which leads to the full A level, Advanced Religious Studies 2061.
AS Religious Studies
The AS modules range from: religion and ethics, religion and contemporary society, Sikhism and Buddhism. Each unit is worth 50% of the AS level and worth 25% of the Advanced A2 level. The method of assessment is examination consisting of two exams of 1hr and 15mins each.
Advanced Religious Studies
A2 modules range from: Philosophy of Religion, Life Death and Beyond, and Religion and Contemporary Society and a choice of world revision. Method of assessment is two examinations of 1hr 30mins each and one extended essay from each unit.
Teaching and Learning styles
Learning activities are interactive and include small group class activities, whole group discussions, presentations and fun active involvement in class participation. The method of delivery ensures all learning styles, visual, auditory and kinaesthetic are catered for.

Assessment and Progression:
Assignments and tests are set frequently, as well as mock examinations at the appropriate times. Some assessment is computer based and marked. Examinations are held in January and June.

Careers within Religious Studies are wide ranging, and include teaching, social work, and any graduate fast track training program.
Religious Studies gives students a valuable insight into the truly diverse and multicultural society in which we live. It is a demanding A level and adequate preparation for A number of popular and demanding undergraduate courses.
The skills leaned by doing Religious Studies are transferable skills which are highly valued in many occupations, and for entry to many degrees, even if you do not pursue a career in Religious Studies. The subject is suitable for beginners and it is not necessary for you to have studied GCSE level Religious Studies previously.

Duration:
One year for AS Level, a further one year for A2.
AS Level 5 hours per week, in three sessions, over 1 year
Advanced Level 5 hours per week, in three sessions, over 1 year.
Starts September each year.
