Fundamentals of Quark XPress 7.0

Objectives

The course is designed to give new users an appreciation of the basics of this industry standard professional typesetting and page layout programme. The exact content of the course can be tailored to meet the individual needs of the user. Students are encouraged to bring along samples of their type of work.


Pre-requisites:

A working knowledge of the chosen computer operating system (i.e Mac or PC), together with some knowledge of basic traditional graphic design and reprographic terminology and techniques.


Course Includes:

A comprehensive set of reference notes covering course topics, follow-up telephone support and, for training on Transmedia premises, lunch and refreshments.


Course Outline


· About Quark Xpress- Overview of DTP

· Projects and Layouts, setting up page size, margins, columns, guides and gutters

· Saving/Naming/Renaming/ Closing a Project/layout/template

· Moving around, scroll bars, 'live' scrolling, zooming in/ out

· Floating palettes, hiding/ showing floating palettes, palette sets

· Text box creation tool, create/ resize text boxes using handles

· Creating and modifying text. Type attributes- font, typestyle, typesize, leading, alignment, tracking, kerning, horizontal/ vertical scaling, baseline shift

· Undo, Copy, Cut, Paste and Select All commands for items/ items contents

· Hiding/ showing invisible (non-printing) characters

· Accessing special characters with glyphs palette

· Text overflow, linking/ unlinking text boxes using link/ unlink chain tools

· Paragraph formats- indents, hanging indents, 1st line indents, drop capitals, widow and orphans, paragraph rules, spacing, Indent here command for bulleted lists/ numbered paragraphs

· Text runaround, Item, Auto and Manual Image modes

· Hyphenation and Justification







· Picture box creation tools, create/ resize picture box

· Importing pictures, basic image manipulation, e.g resizing and cropping, framing/ keylining boxes

· Deleting items/ item contents

· Drawing rules/lines using freeline drawing tool, orthogonal drawing tool, defining rule weights

· Using the Item tool and the rotate tool

· Revert to saved command

* Find/ Change (search and replace)

·Spell Checking

· Tablar setting. Defining tab positions, tab alignment, leadered lines, aligning figures, modifying tabs

·Tables- creating, modifying, converting text to tables, gridlines, importing data from Exce
