Level One If you enjoy all aspects of painting and decorating and want to develop your talents further, this introductory course to decorative finishing will provide you with the skills required to produce a range of basic specialist finishes. You will get the opportunity to develop a portfolio of decorative finishes and produce a small artefact/item of furniture. You will learn about preparing surfaces to achieve quality finishes, applying materials using different application techniques, mixing various water-based and solvent-based glaze mediums, applying and producing decorative effects and making/applying stencils.

Course programme
Successful completion of this course will enhance your range of decorating skills and enable you to progress to an intermediate level in decorative finishes.
The main course subject covered are:
- health and safety
- preparation of surfaces
- application of ground coats
- mixing of colours and mediums
- production of broken colour techniques - rag rolling, sponge stippling, frottage etc
- production of pain distressing techniques, including crackle glaze, wax resist and crackle varnish
- production and application of stencils.
