On this course we aim to develop you as a student to become a highly-skilled, experienced, professional, computer game developer and technical designer. You will be introduced to the creative and technical aspects of game level design and creation, game play, technical computer animation, game programming and script programming, supported by appropriate contextual and technical theory to inform your practice. You will learn how to generate and develop ideas and solve technical problems. In the final year you will undertake an individual project and major production project in a studio environment designed to replicate real world and industry production processes. There will also be opportunities to work on projects for external clients.
In the second and third years you can develop your own areas of interest and expertise through a range of options. Between the second and third year you can also take a year out to study abroad at a partner university or to do a placement in industry if you choose to study our four-year course.
The course is designed for those students who want to learn to design, develop and programme computer games, using the most up to date industry standard technologies. Whilst we are not subject specific, the course typically attracts students with an interest in computer programming and scripting, animation, game play, artificial intelligence. We welcome students who have A level, BTEC or equivalent qualifications.

The programme is intended to equip students who wish to develop expertise in the creative, aesthetic and technical aspects of computer game development, with the skills to succeed, supported by a range of relevant audio-visual media disciplines.

Year 1

  • Introduction to 3D Computer Animation (20 credits) – core
    To provide an introduction to the theory and practice of 3D computer modelling and animation.
  • Introduction to Computer Programming for Games (20 credits) – core
    Provides an introduction to computer programming with particular emphasis on program design and implementation.
  • Creativity and Imagination (20 credits) – core
    Develops students' ability to create new ideas and to develop appropriate creative strategies for making artefacts, media production, other forms of digital media production, or for self-expression.
  • Creative Industries – Foundations (20 credits) – core
    Equips students with a range of foundational skills required for successful advancement in the creative industries.
  • History and Conventions of Computer Games (20 credits) – core
    Provides an overview of the history of computer games and an introduction to the techniques, practices, technology and conventions of the design of such systems.
  • 3D Character Modelling and Animation (20 credits) – core
    Provides practical knowledge of 3D computer animation production processes in a project-based environment with particular reference to character animation.

At the end of Year 1, students will be eligible to exit with the award of Certificate of Higher Education if they have successfully completed at least 120 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.

Year 2

  • Issues in Web Development and Technology (20 credits) – core
    To provide an introduction to programming for internet applications and an understanding of current contextual concerns in the fields surrounding the internet (including broadcast media).
  • Game Appreciation and Industry Analysis (20 credits) – core
    To analyse and critically assess core constructs of computer game products and the development process, within the context of contemporary issues affecting the industry.
  • Script Programming and Technical Animation (20 credits) – core
    To learn the fundamentals and the concepts and of 3D embedded scripting language to students with basically no programming experience before.
  • Game Design Programming and Development (20 credits) – core
    To introduce the technology of computer game construction and programming.
  • Indie Games: Concept, Design and Development (20 credits) – core
  • Environment, Set and Prop Creation (20 credits) – optional
    To gain a specialist understanding of the design principles, creation methodologies and technical implementation of modelling and texturing 3D environments, sets and props, as they relate to real time render environments.
  • Multimedia Application Development (20 credits) – optional
    To develop understanding and skills in multimedia production techniques, to create an interactive game.
  • Motion Capture and Digital Scanning (20 credits) – optional
    To attain a broad understanding of the processes of the motion capture sequence, from setting up cameras and capturing data through to editing and transferring capture data to industry standard animation packages.

At the end of Year 2, students will be eligible to exit with the award of Diploma of Higher Education if they have successfully completed at least 240 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.

Final year

  • Major Project Pre-Production (20 credits) - core
  • Individual Project (40 credits) - core
    To integrate material from other modules into a major digital media project; to provide you with a platform for autonomous learning within your chosen area of specialism; to develop a self-critical, editorial awareness of one`s own body of work; to present that body of work in a visually impressive video; to develop presentation skills.
  • Major Project Production (40 credits) – core
  • Motion Capture and Digital Scanning (20 credits) – optional
    To attain a broad understanding of the processes of the motion capture sequence, from setting up cameras and capturing data through to editing and transferring capture data to industry standard animation packages.
  • Facial Modelling / Animation (20 credits) – optional
  • AI for Games (20 credits) – optional
    Introduction to real-time AI and the games industry.
  • Effects Animation and Dynamics for VFX (20 credits) – optional
    To introduce advanced topics and concepts in the field of technical animation and make students aware of the appropriate use of simulation and effects, taking into account complexity, rendering, time, memory and resource overheads.
  • Application Programming & Development (20 credits) – optional
    To develop understanding and skills in multimedia production techniques, to create an application, plug-in or interactive game.

Students will be eligible to exit with the fall back award of Ordinary Degree of Bachelor if they have successfully completed at least 300 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.

Students will be eligible for the award of Honours Degree of Bachelor if they have successfully completed at least 360 credits and achieved the award learning outcomes.
