The combination of a consuming passion for games and the determination to build a career out of reporting on or promoting gaming, will underpin your success on this unique course.
But it’s not just about reviewing games - this course is designed to get you thinking and writing about the games, the creators, the industry, and about what works and why. Journalism and Games Design are two of the biggest and most successful departments at Staffordshire University and have reputations for real-world focused delivery, first-class resources and strong contacts in both industries. You’ll gain a full set of multi-media skills - including social media - with a specific focus on games and gaming. You’ll also get to specialise in areas like video, online, writing and PR and have the opportunity to take exams set by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).
The course is delivered by experienced practitioners and academics and structured around lectures, seminars, practical workshops and independent study. You’ll have access to industry-standard technical facilities for researching and writing, recording and editing for video, text and audio content. The focus of the full three years, is on hands-on devotion to working professionally in games journalism and PR with skills and knowledge to work in a wide array of other fields, and includes a fully-assessed work placement.

Each year you'll study three distinct strands - journalism, PR and games, giving you a solid grounding in the skills you'll need to enter this rapidly evolving industry.
Year 1 (Core)
Journalism in Practice - The fundamental skills and techniques for producing journalistic content
PR Practices - Getting to grips with the essentials of PR (public relations) and its key role in establishing and promoting reputations and awareness
Computer Games in Society - Getting a grasp of gaming’s importance at work, rest and play as a major presence and force in the social and business world
Journalism Studies- Focusing on academic perspectives and the notion of the thinking journalist to consider the purpose, duties and responsibilities of journalism
Introduction to Media Law - Basics of law for would-be journalists
Games Blogging and Vlogging - Practical skills in blogging and Youtubing for a gamer audience
Year 2 (Core)
NCTJ law - More advanced media law leading to professional exam
Production Journalism and Magazine Design, Development and Production – Learn how to produce professional publications to industry standards.
PR Operations - developing a real-world focus on how PR professionals operate in the work-place including case studies and direct contact with PR operators
Games News Day - Practical training in working in a games news operation
The History of Games Technology - Introduction to key moments in gaming and technology development
The British Media - Understanding the history and role of the media
Year 2 (Options)
Options include modules focusing on games vlogging, magazine design, and new developments in games and in journalism
Year 3 (Core)
Work placement - Within games or games PR industry
Journalism Project and Pro PR – Both major self-directed projects, including a formal academic dissertation route
