Programme Description:
Chemistry is a vibrant and exciting subject. It is involved in everything around us from the making of new materials to understanding biological systems and from the food we eat to the medicines which keep us healthy. The Chemistry programme aims to develop learners’ analytical and practical skills to enable them to progress to higher education leading to a career in Science or Health. A level Chemistry is a compulsory requirement of many higher education courses including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and Pharmacy.

Programme Content:

AS Level

Atomic Structure and Radioactivity, Chemical Quantities and Equations, Inorganic Chemistry (reactions of the Periodic Table), Industrial Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry (including the Greenhouse Effect and Acid Rain). An introduction to Organic Chemistry. Also a study of whether reactions happen (Energetics), how fast they happen (Kinetics) and what the yield is likely to be (Equilibria).

A2 Level

Further Inorganic eg. the Transition Metals, and physical chemistry. Lots more Organic chemistry including: the synthesis of important substances such as pharmaceuticals and polymers, and techniques for analysing substances eg. Infra-red Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry. Also organic practical work, eg. the synthesis of aspirin.

Additional information

Method of Assessment Modules 1, 2, 4 and 5 are assessed by written examination. Module 3a - Experimental techniques. Module 3c - Practical course work. Module 6a - Synoptic Paper. Module 6c - Practical course work.
