Programme Description:
AS candidates will be required to: listen and respond to a variety of spoken sources, including authentic sources; read and respond to a variety of written texts, including authentic sources, covering different contexts, registers, styles and genres; adapt their spoken and written language appropriately for different situations and purposes; use the language accurately to express facts and ideas, and to present explanations, opinions and information in both speech and writing; understand and apply the grammatical system and a range of structures; transfer meaning from foreign language into English/Welsh.
In addition, A level candidates will be required to: use the language to present viewpoints, develop arguments, analyse and evaluate, in speech and writing; understand and apply the grammatical system and a range of structures; study aspects of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of one or more of the countries or communities whose language is being studied; transfer meaning from English/Welsh into the foreign language.

Programme Features:
Excellent results Small groups allow individual attention A wide range of contemporary, cultural and social topics are studied Candidates choice of oral topic possible at A Level Candidates have independent control of listening material in exam and use of language laboratory and self-study packs Excellent resources available in Learning Resource Centre and library including language magazines, tapes, videos and Language computer programmes Grammar is dealt with in a supportive and systematic way. Almost exclusive use of French in classroom activities.
Programme Content:
The following topics will be studied with reference to target language countries as well as in a wider, global context as appropriate.
AS:
Leisure and Lifestyles, including travel and tourism, sport, hobbies, entertainment, customs, traditions, healthy living – health and nutrition, diet and exercise; unhealthy living - drugs, aids, smoking, alcohol, etc. The Individual and Society, including relationships and responsibilities, gender issues, youth culture (values, peer groups, fashions and trends etc.), education, vocational training and future careers.
Advanced:
Environmental Issues, including technology, pollution, global warming, transport, energy, nuclear energy, renewable energies, conservation, recycling, sustainability Social and Political Issues, including the role of the media, racism, immigration social exclusion and integration, terrorism, world of work (employment, commerce, globalization, etc.)
