This course reflects the relevance of law in our daily lives. It is up-to-date and includes the critical analysis of many topical issues, along with the opportunity to put theory into practice by suggesting outcomes to actual problem situations. Topical issues include the legal professions and the judiciary; the court system of Wales & England; tribunals and ADR; the role of the CPS; the use of juries; how the EU affects the Sovereignty of the UK Parliament; murder and manslaughter; assaults; police powers and sentencing options.

About this course

Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C, one of which must be either GCSE Mathematics, GCSE English Language (Grade B) or GCSE Welsh. Students should also have an interest in legal issues and current affairs. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Curriculum Area.

Course programme

Examines the processes and structures which create, administer and change the law. Discussions surrounding current legal affairs. Many educational visits to places of interest in Law such as the local courts and The Old Bailey in London Guest speakers by local solicitors, magistrates and the CPS Attendance at A Level Law conferences at Swansea University

A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to Higher level qualifications such as degrees or Higher National Diplomas Career prospects are not confined to the legal profession and many students progress into the CPS, the civil service, and local government The subject is also relevant to careers in other fields such as business, finance, and management

AS Level - Two (2 x 90mins) written papers assessing the knowledge of the Anglo-Welsh legal system.

A2 Level - Two (1 x 90mins & 1 x 150mins) written papers assessing the knowledge of Criminal Law and Justice.
