Studying Maths at A-level will open a number of doors to students. Not only is it a valuable and interesting subject in its own right but it is an essential building block for practically all science and technology subjects. Students following predominately arts subjects should also consider taking the AS level in Maths as it broadens their curriculum and it will improve their grasp and understanding of important concepts such as statistical analysis, graphs and data presentation, and number theory.Studying Maths at A-level will open a number of doors to students. Course Content

At Carlisle College we follow the Edexcel A-level syllabus. During Year 1 students study three modules which lead to an AS qualification.

AS LEVEL

This course builds on the knowledge gained at GCSE and extends the range of mathematical skills and techniques needed to solve more difficult problems.

Core 1-Algebra and functions, co-ordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane, sequences and series, differentiation and integration.

Core 2-Further algebraic techniques, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, further calculus.

Statistics 1 or Mechanics 1

At the end of the year students may opt not to continue with the subject or may go on to study three more A2 modules leading to a full A-level qualification.

A2 LEVEL

The second year course aims to develop an understanding of coherence and progression in Maths and of how different areas of Maths are connected.

Core 3-Functions, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, numerical methods and further differentiation.

Core 4-Algebra and functions, sequences and series, vectors, parametric equations and further calculus.

Either:-

Statistics 2

Or:-

Mechanics 2
