This course offers a framework through which students can study the distinctive contributions that the mass media make to their understanding and enjoyment of the world in which they live. Through a variety of approaches to the constantly changing media environment, students will develop a critical and analytical understanding of a wide range of media texts as well as focusing on the sociological and political contexts of the media institutions which create and circulate them.
About this course
Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C including English Language and/or Media Studies at a minimum of grade B. Students should also have an interest in television, journalism, media and films. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Curriculum Area.

Additional information
AS Level: One examination focusing on an unseen print or audio visual text, and requiring candidates to engage with issues of audience response and representations (50%). A coursework portfolio consisting of two linked pieces of practical work (one pre-production and one production) plus an accompanying report (50%).
A2 Level: One examination focusing on a range of media industries, using case study material to explore key concepts (50%). A coursework portfolio which contains an investigative essay on aspects of media output (chosen by the candidate) and an accompanying piece of practical work.
