A Level
Religious Studies is suitable for any student with the necessary GCSE qualifications, even those who have not done RS at GCSE. Students do not have to be religious to benefit from and succeed in RS. Some of our most successful students have been agnostic (not having any particular religious conviction). Religious Studies is an academic study of religions and takes a global perspective, specialising in World Religions, Philosophy of Religion and Ethics.
About this course
Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C, one of which must be either GCSE Mathematics or GCSE English Language. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Curriculum Area.

Course programme
- Religious Studies has been thoroughly modernised to reflect the interests of young people. The course therefore focuses upon moral issues and dilemmas and upon a multicultural approach to World Religions. Christianity is studied as one religious tradition but given equal importance with all six major World Religions.
- The course is assessed entirely by essay writing. This means that students develop their writing skills fully during the course and finish well-prepared for the writing components of higher degrees.
- In RS open debate is encouraged fully. Students are expected to participate and to develop their skills in the oral presentation of their views. This is useful for all other areas of study.
- Students are introduced to at least one religious tradition which will be entirely new to them. Resources in the department for the study of World Religions are excellent.
- A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to Higher level qualifications such as degrees or Higher National Diplomas.
- There are a number of careers directly related to Religious Studies including Minister of Religion, Youth and Community Worker, and RE Teacher. Other careers Religious Studies might be useful would include Social Worker, Civil Service, Journalism, Counsellor, Police Force, Charity Worker, Refugee Counsellor and any other profession requiring cultural understanding and sensitivity.
