Course programme

Applied Business Double GCSE
This course is offered for 2009/10 but will be replaced by Business, Administration and Finance Higher Diploma from September 2010.

Business is vital, providing jobs and income and generating wealth. This double award, one year course is a foundation for AS/A level or National Diploma Business. Varied teaching activities will help you succeed. You will meet and listen to visiting business people as well as visiting local businesses: our current students visited Scotsdales Garden Centre and received a talk from the managing director.

There are three units:

Unit 1 Investigating Business
This unit investigates the different functions found in businesses, how they affect each other, and how businesses are influenced by the wider world. You study how businesses sell their products, choose locations, introduce and use new technology and do all this competitively without harm to the environment.

Unit 2 People and Business
People are a vital resource, so the work of a human resource department is the focus of this unit. You will learn about the different roles people have and the working relationships between employers and employees. You will study how businesses are organised and how technology allows new kinds of working. You will explore how a business provides good customer service.

Unit 3 Business Finance
This looks at finance: how the money flowing into and out of a business is managed and how accounts are kept. You will learn to use ICT in finance, how to interpret financial documents and how to make financial decisions.

Assessment
Units 1 and 2 are assessed by coursework. There is an examination for Unit 3.
