Course programme
You will study three Literary texts: a Shakespeare play, poems from different cultures, and a prose text (such as a novel, or some short stories), and you will do a written assessment for each
You will do two pieces of creative writing
You will do your written coursework named above as controlled assessments (in supervised conditions)
You will do one exam, testing reading and writing skills at the end of the year
You will learn how to analyse texts, write answers, read for meanings in texts, and write using particular forms of writing during the course

If you have not taken GCSE before, or it is a long time since you have studied, we will ask you to take an assessment to look at your reading and writing before accepting you on to the one-year GCSE course. We may then advise you to take a course which gives you a chance to brush up some of your skills before taking GCSE the following yearGCSE English is an essential requirement for many careers, including Teaching, Social Work and the Health Professions. With a good GCSE grade there are a wide range of career options open to you
If you want to take your studies further, you could progress to an Access to Higher Education Diploma, and then to a degree courseOn this intensive course, you will complete five pieces of written coursework and possibly three assessed oral assignments in the first term. Coursework includes essays on Shakespeare and on a prose text, a poetry assignment and two pieces of creative writing. You will study a collection of poetry and practice comprehension based on broadsheet articles and other non/fiction material.
A high standard of accuracy is needed to achieve a grade C or above so students are expected to work hard on their grammar, spelling, punctuation and essay planning.
Study times are one class of 3 hours per week. We offer daytime classes and also evening classes from 5.45pm - 9.00pm on Tuesdays or Thursdays.
