English GCSE

INTRODUCTION
You will, of course, have some previous experience of this subject. Your motivation will be high because you will want to improve on your existing G.C.S.E. grade, as the next step from your most recent course of study.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You will learn to communicate more effectively in writing and speaking, and you will further develop your reading and listening skills.

CONTENT
You will study literature including a Shakespeare play, a novel or collection of short stories and between 6 and 10 poems from different cultures. You will also study Media and non fiction texts. We hope to increase your confidence in the use of English in different written and spoken situations such as speech writing and speech making, report writing, formatting letters and designing leaflets.

HOW WILL I STUDY?
Classes will introduce you to a range of activities: reading and discussing literature, watching films and videos, writing creatively, factually and persuasively and speaking and listening on a one-to-one basis, in small groups and in role-play situations. The final assessment of your work is by two written examinations (60%), a coursework folder (20%) and a series of oral assignments (20%). REMEMBER….. Although you may feel you have little or no choice about taking the subject, you in fact get a lot of fun out of it. You will also feel justly proud of your increased skill in the language which makes it easier and more enjoyable to study other subjects.
