About this course
You will need: Most students will progress to this course after completing Level 2 functional skills in their first year at college. You should be willing to participate in group activities, to read a wide range of material and produce written work to deadlines, Because: there will be group discussions there will be written assignments on your reading.

What does the course consist of?
There will be reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Reading
This will include leaflets, advertisements and articles as well as poetry, a novel and a Shakespeare play.
You will be assessed by written examination and coursework
Writing
This will be about your responses to your reading and also your own creative writing in a range of formats - letters, articles, leaflets, stories.

Speaking and listening
This includes class presentations and discussions in pairs or small groups.

What else do I need to know?
- You will need GCSE grade C or above to take a level 3 (A Level or equivalent) course at college.
- If you wish to go on to higher education it is essential to have a C+ in English, and many employers will also require this.
