Course Content:
Students will be required to produce writing aimed at a variety of audiences.

Written coursework assignments will include:
· Personal writing - fiction and non-fiction.
· Response to a Shakespeare play.
· Response to a novel.

Exam preparation will include:
· Analysing Media texts.
· Responding to non-fiction texts.
· Writing to Argue/Persuade/Advise
· Responding to poetry from different cultures.
· Writing to Analyse/Review/Comment.
In addition, students will have to complete oral activities both individually and in groups.

Teaching Learning Methods:
Teaching will involve whole class discussions, role play and group work. Students will be required to show their learning and development through individual written assignments and oral assessments. Homework is set and assessed on a regular basis throughout the course.

Assessment:
· Written coursework is worth 20% of the total marks.
· Oral coursework is worth 20% of the total marks
· The examined element is worth 60% of the total marks and comprises two separate examinations at the end of the course.

Skills & Commitment:
For most students this is their second sitting of this course, therefore, a real desire to improve upon their previous performance is essential. The ability to write good clear English and express themselves effectively to a variety of audiences is clearly of prime importance. This is an intensive and demanding course and students are expected to put in at least three hours homework per week in order to succeed.

Cost:
Students are required to provide their own stationery; all other materials will be provided.

Progression:
A good pass at GCSE English is required for most types of employment and courses in H.E.
