The course builds on the biology studied up to year 11, but also contains a substantial amount of new material. It is both for one-year GCSE students and AS/A2 students still seeking a GCSE science qualification. There will be a wide variety of AS/A2 teaching and learning activities, including practical experiements. Numeracy skills will be required, such as the ability to plot and interpret graphs. The course will not only give you a chance to expand and reinforce your biological knowlege and understanding, but will also improve your skills in areas such as data analysis, research and writing in a clear, scientific style.
You will study:
l the dependence of humans on other organisms: food chains/webs, pyramids of energy and biomass, recycling;
l hygiene and health: diet, drug abuse, smoking and disease, food preservation, clean water supply, sewage and refuse disposal;
l the impact of rapid human population increase and pollution on the environment.
Assessment
This course is assessed mainly by examination, but there is some coursework.
