Past experience has shown that for this course you normally need a grade B in English Language GCSE and a grade B in a Modern Language at GCSE. You will also need a commitment to the study of the Latin language.

The course aims to develop a good level of competence in understanding Latin and a deeper knowledge of the culture and civilisation of Ancient Rome. You will learn to read Latin texts in their original language by authors such as Virgil, Ovid, Pliny, Tacitus and Horace.
You will also study topics such as Daily Life in Roman Society, The Roman Army, Women in Roman Society, Roman Britain and Roman Religion.
Latin encourages you to communicate clearly and effectively and to appreciate Latin literature in its cultural context and original language. Latin develops a sensitive and analytical approach to language generally, including an awareness of the relationship between Latin and the languages of today.
