GCSE Mathematics


Course summary:
The course is designed to offer students the best opportunity to develop their confidence in the use of mathematics. It is a natural development and progression from assessment at Key Stage 3 and will help to consolidate the students†understanding of mathematics and develop their ability to think and reason mathematically. It should provide a worthwhile educational experience for all students whether or not they go on to study the subject beyond this level. The syllabus meets all the requirements for the National Curriculum in Mathematics.

Course content:
Number
Simple arithmetic, decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios & estimations.
Algebra
Simple formulae and equations, inequalities, number patterns & graphs.
Shape and Space
Simple shapes, symmetry, angles, area and volume, construction, transformations, bearings & Pythagoras' Theorem.
Handling Data
Collection and grouping of data, pie Charts, frequency diagrams, averages and range, scatter diagrams & probability

Course structure:
This is a modular course
Module 1 AO4 (Handling data)
Module 3 AO2 (Number & algebra)
Module 5 AO2 (Number & algebra) & AO3 (Shape, space & measures)

Assessment procedure:
There are two tiers of entry for this syllabus:
Foundation Target Grades C - G
Higher Target Grades A* - D
Candidates will be entered at the appropriate tier, determined by on-course progress, for each individual module. The assessment for each tier consists of
three module examinations which include both calculator and non calculator sections.

Module 1 Written Paper 18% of total assessment
2 x 30 minutes (Both tiers)
Section A . Calculator
Section B . Non-calculator

Module 3 Written Paper 27% of total assessment
2 x 45 minutes (Both tiers)
Section A . Calculator
Section B . Non-calculator

Module 5 Written Paper 55% of total assessment
Paper 1 Non-calculator 1 hour 15 minutes (both tiers)
Paper 2 Calculator 1 hour 15 minutes (both tiers)


Qualifications achieved:
GCSE Mathematics B

Progression opportunities:
Students who achieve a grade B or above will be able to go on to study AS mathematics.
