GCSE MATHEMATICS (MODULAR)

WHY SHOULD I STUDY GCSE MATHS?
A reasonable level of mathematical competence is required for many advanced level courses and of course by most employers. A good grade in GCSE Maths is highly desirable for this purpose.

COURSE STRUCTURE & CONTENT

This GCSE course:
  • follows the National Curriculum for Mathematics
  • is available at two levels Foundation (grades C G) and Higher (grades A* D)
  • offers a modular assessment of Mathematics via three modules over one year
  • reports results at the end of each module
  • allows candidates to carry forward the marks for the modules

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Each module is assessed by examination only, one part with a calculator and one part without.

Module When taken Weighting Exams

Handling Data November 18% 2 x 30 minutes

Number (and some algebra) March 27% 2 x 45 minutes

More algebra, plus Shape, May/June 55% 2 x 1 hour 15 min Space and Measures

The results for each module are reported separately and combined to give an overall grade.

COURSE COMMITMENT
The course uses a full block of time (4 hours) from September to June. Practice time outside lessons preparing for each of the examinations will ensure the maximum grade.

PROGRESSION ROUTES
Obtaining a grade C will enable progression to AS Statistics and is a requirement for other advanced level courses. AS levels in Maths and some Sciences require a grade C from the Higher tier. A grade C or higher in Mathematics GCSE is a requirement for a wide range of careers and higher education courses. For others a level 2 numeracy qualification may be sufficient.
