This course is for adults, or young people between the age of 16 and 18, who wish to obtain GCSE maths for access to employment or a course of study, to improve opportunities for advancement at work, or for its own sake.
You will study a full maths curriculum which includes:
- use of fractions, percentages and decimals
- geometry and trigonometry
- handling data, including graphs, averages and probability
What background and qualifications do you need to join?
You can only join this course by coming to see a tutor at an Advice and Guidance session. The tutor will assess which level of course is best for you. Please see the website for dates, times and locations.
What does the course lead to?
GCSE maths is an essential qualification for access to many careers including teaching, social work and nursing. In addition, it permits entry to several degree courses including psychology and the biological sciences.
You will be entered for either the foundation or the higher tier GCSE, to be taken in term 3. Each tier comprises two written papers, non-calculator and calculator. There is no coursework component.
What are the facilities and equipment like?
All our classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards and classroom computers, providing opportunities for e-learning.
How much should I study outside class?
The course demands a commitment to weekly homework tasks as well as attendance at both sessions each week.
How is the course assessed?
The choice of entry to either Foundation or Higher tiers is dependent upon your performance in term 1 and the early part of term 2.
Are any course materials online?
Some materials will be available on the college's moodle site.
What books and equipment do I need?
No books are essential for this course but a text book is desirable - course tutor to advise. You will need a scientific calculator and basic geometry equipment.
What else do I need to buy? / What extra costs are there?
You should bring a folder, paper and pen to the class.
