Course programme

The course is part-time over one year, normally from September to May.

There are weekly lessons of 3 hours with a choice of either evening (6pm-9pm) or daytime (10am – 1pm)sessions.

You should expect to do around 3 hours per week of individual study in addition to the lessons.

Please note that September 2016 is the final opportunity to study for the one year GCSE combined sciences award as it will not be available under the new style GCSE’s using the 9 -1 grading system which is being introduced from this year.

Teaching is done through a combination of lectures, tutorials and practical experiments.

In each section the work covers a wide range of topics to give a broad understanding of the principles underlying the subject.

Examples of biology topics studied are: Evolution, genes and genetic diseases, nerves and hormones, diabetes, drugs, infection and immunity, plants and environment.

Examples of chemistry topics studied are: Earth’s atmosphere, acids & bases, electrolysis, metals & ores, oil and plastics, fuels and climate change.

Examples of physics topics studied are: The Solar System and Universe, Life cycle of stars, lenses & telescopes, Waves and energy, Electromagnetic radiation, energy resources and generating electricity.
