Our Postgraduate Certificate in Geographic Data Science (Intensive) will provide you with advanced scientific and technical training in capturing, analysing and visualising geospatial information. Thanks to increasing computing power and wealth of digital data, we can record and store an unprecedented amount of information about the world. Geographic information plays a crucial role in our society, contributing to planning, analysis and management in sectors as diverse as transportation, insurance, banking, telecommunications, logistics, energy, retail, agriculture, healthcare, urban planning and scientific research.

We will introduce you to the principles and applications of geographic data science at an advanced level through the development of scientific knowledge, technical expertise and practical experience.

The emphasis is on enabling you to think analytically and develop new skills that have real-world applications for your work and career. You will develop the relevant theoretical background knowledge and a conceptual understanding of geographic data science whilst also acquiring key data science skills that are in high demand in industry. The modules will cover important tools for research in the field: geographic information systems, such as ArcGIS and QGIS; map-making and cartography; big data management with spatial databases, such as SQL and NoSQL. Emphasis will be placed on programming, data science and management, and web-based GIS and online mapping.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Geographic Data Science (Intensive) is aimed at professionals and researchers who work with, or wish to work with, geographically referenced data. It is ideal if you are interested in studying at postgraduate level for personal or professional reasons, but don't yet want to commit to a full MSc.

Assessment is an integral part of your university studies and usually consists of a combination of coursework and examinations, although this will vary from course to course - on some of our courses, assessment is entirely by coursework. The methods of assessment on this course are specified below under 'Methods of assessment on this course'. You will need to allow time to complete coursework and prepare for exams.

Where a course has unseen written examinations, these may be held termly, but, on the majority of our courses, exams are usually taken in the Summer term, during May to June. Exams may be held at other times of the year as well. In most cases, exams are held during the day on a weekday - if you have daytime commitments, you will need to make arrangements for daytime attendance - but some exams are held in the evening. Exam timetables are published online.
