About the subject

The AS unit comprises two exams, unit 1 - Global Challenges (World at Risk and Going Global), and unit 2 - Geographical Investigations. The units are assessed at a standard intermediate between GCSE and A level. The specification covers all key skills areas. The course is ideal for combining with Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, Maths and Science or as a contrast to English, History, Social Science. Geography is a very flexible subject with something for everyone.
The A2 units comprise two exams, unit 3 - Contested Planet and unit 4 - Geographical Research. Topics include ecosystems, weather, population and industry. Students can research topics such as Hazards, Development, Pollution and Leisure and Tourism. A synoptic unit covers decision-making skills in an analysis exercise.

Learning Styles

A variety of learning styles is used from problem solving and fieldwork to discussions, note-taking, structured questions, essays and report work with extended writing. The specification covers all key skill areas.

Subject combinations and progression
Geography is a flexible subject which is especially attractive for those who want to maintain strong links with the 'real world' outside the classroom. It combines well with any subject since it can be classed as either an art, science or social science subject. Geography can be used to pursue many and varied careers and it covers all the key skill areas for advanced study.
