If you are curious and questioning about the world around you, whether local or global, our course will stimulate your interest in, and your sense of wonder about, different places. You will be challenged to interpret your view of the world from the different perspectives of both physical and human geography. We will also introduce you to the investigative side of the subject so that you can explore and unearth evidence vital to contributing towards topical debates on global issues.

Geography will appeal to you if:
• you are curious about the world's places, peoples and environments
• you like asking questions and finding answers
• you are interested in local, regional and global issues
• you have the ability to think independently you wish to explore human, physical and environmental geographical relationships.

Progression:
You will find that studying geography is a brilliant step towards a wider range of higher education courses and/or employment opportunities.

• Further education - geographers can go on to study higher level courses, including foundation degrees, undergraduate degrees and/or BTEC higher nationals.

• Employment - geographers can go into a wide range of jobs, including advertising, education, environmental management, finance, law, marketing, retailing and sales, social/health services.

Entry Requirements:
In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

· four to five* GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English and maths)

· an intermediate GNVQ in a related subject

· a BTEC first diploma in a related subject

· an NVQ level 2/technical certificate in a related subject

· successful completion of an apprenticeship programme

· successful completion of the Gateway/Newstart programme

· equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

* A level candidates will be expected to have five GCSEs

Duration: One year Course Overview
What does the course involve?:

You will study global themes, including globalisation and climate change. You will discover how your own actions can relate to the wider world, be it your local area or a country far away. You will study two units:

• Unit 1: Global Challenges - in this unit you will study a range of topics such as global hazards, climate change and future global challenges.

• Unit 2: Geographical Investigations - this gives you an opportunity to undertake geographical research, including fieldwork. You will investigate two topics in-depth, one of extreme weather or crowded coasts (physical geography), and one of unequal spaces or re-branding places (human geography).

Are there any exams?:
Unit 1: Global Challenges - one and a half hour written examination, including a colour resource booklet.

Unit 2: Geographical Investigations - one hour written examination, including a colour resource booklet. You will be asked about your fieldwork skills in this examination.
