About this course

The main requirement is a willingness to get involved and be actively responsible for your own progress. GCSEs at grade C or above in Geography, Maths, English and Science are desirable.

About the Course
AS Level
Unit 1, Topic 1: The World at Risk -
hazards and climate change and the impact on world systems.
Topic 2: Going Global - the global economy, population dynamics, world cities and urbanisation.
Unit 2: Geographical Investigations - a selection of topics including extreme weather, crowded coasts and world inequality or rebranding places such as Manchester.
A2 Level
Studies these global themes in more detail.
Unit 3 includes six topics: Energy Security, Water Conflicts, Biodiversity under Threat, Superpowers and Trade Issues, Reducing the Development Gap and Technological Impacts.
Unit 4 gives you the opportunity to research one topic of particular interest to you from the following: Tectonic Activity and Hazards; Cold Environments; Life on the Margins of Survival; the Geography of Culture, People and Places; Pollution and Human Health Risk; Consuming the Rural Landscape; or Leisure and Tourism. A variety of fieldwork opportunities will be part of the course.
Geography goes easily with many AS/A2 subjects, Applied AS/A2 Travel and Tourism or BTEC National Diploma in Business.

What are the entry requirements?
How is the course assessed?
There will be two written modular examinations each at AS and A2 Levels, in a variety of question styles: resource based, short structured questions and essay. There is no coursework.
Fees
No Course Fees for Under 19's. Over 19's must pay, or claim Level 2 or Level 3 Entitlement for FREE courses .
What next?
As Geography teaches you a range of skills - written, graphical, cartographic, statistical and interpretative - it is suitable for a wide range of jobs that might stipulate one or two A Levels. Jobs with more direct connections include agriculture, forestry, conservation, tourism, town and country planning and travel. The subject combines easily with many others if you want to go on to higher education.
