The Geopolitics, Territory & Security MA is a unique multidisciplinary course that focuses on the territorial aspect of inter-state relations. You will explore geopolitical and political geographic analysis – contextualised within the wider social sciences – and the relevant aspects of international law to understand the creation and maintenance of international boundaries, borders at various scales and the factors driving contemporary territorial disputes.

Course programme

Year 1

Courses are divided into modules. You will normally take modules totalling at least 180 credits.

Every 18 months, the course organisers stage The London International Boundary Conference (jointly with leading international law firm Volterra Fietta), a leading international forum dedicated to exploring the complexities of contemporary boundary and territorial disputes. Our first conference was staged in the Spring of 2013, and our next (fourth) iteration is scheduled for December 2018. Masters students on the Geopolitics, Territory and Security course are intimately involved with this event.

King’s College London reviews the modules offered on a regular basis to provide up-to-date, innovative and relevant programmes of study. Therefore, modules offered may change. We suggest you keep an eye on the course finder on our website for updates.

Required Modules You are required to take the following modules:
  • Practising Social Research (20 credits)
  • Dissertation in Geopolitics, Territory & Security (60 credits)
  • Boundaries, Sovereignty & the Territorial State (40 credits)
Optional Modules

You are also required to take 20 credits from a range of optional modules that may typically include:

  • Territorial & Boundary Dispute Resolution (20 credits)
  • Geopolitics of Natural Resource Disputes (20 credits)
  • Critical Geographies of Terrorism (20 credits)
  • Water, Security & the Environment (20 credits)
  • Geopolitics, Power & Place (20 credits)
  • Human Mobility (20 credits)

You will take enough credits to bring your total for the degree to the minimum of 180 from a wide range of optional modules that may include:

  • Any of the modules listed above.
  • Any Level 7 (Master’s) modules offered in the Department of Geography.
  • Any Level 7 (Master’s) modules offered in the Department of War Studies, subject to approval (limited to one 20 or 40 credit module).
  • Up to 20 credits from Level 7 modules offered by other departments or institutes outside of Geography, subject to approval.
