This long-established and successful degree combines studies in German language, culture and contemporary society with in-depth teaching in many varied areas of business practice. You will be based in the Department of German Studies, but half of your teaching is provided by Warwick Business School.

Core modules that focus on aspects of German culture, society, literature, film and history in your first year feed into a range of themed options in the second and final years. You will spend a year abroad, normally in year 3, either as a language assistant, or working or studying at one of our partner universities (including Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Dresden and many more).

About this course

Our modules reflect the range and diversity of Germany’s culture, history and society. Intensive language work from advanced or beginner level opens up the richness of German language and cultural life, enabling you to graduate as a highly qualified linguist with intercultural skills and a deep understanding of key issues and developments in Germany’s past and present.

Our graduates work for organisations including: United Nations, the Ministry of Defence, British Airways, BBC Sussex, Nestle.

Examples of our graduates’ job roles include: Lead European marketer, Freelance translator & Editor, German Language Teacher, Project Controller, European Graduate trainee, Events Assistant.

A level: AAB, including a modern or classical language and A in GCSE Mathematics

IB: 36 points, including 5 in a Higher Level modern or classical language and A in GCSE Mathematics

Course programme

First year core modules may include Modern German Language I and Writers, Media and Society in Contemporary Germany. Optional business modules could include Operations Management; Quantitative Analysis for Management I; Quantitative Analysis for Management II; Economics for Business; Foundations of Finance; Foundations of Accounting; Management Organisations and Society.

Your second year core German modules may include Modern German Language IIas well as optional core modules such as Reading Weimar: Prose Fiction 1919-1933; Film in the Weimar Republic and under National Socialism; Modernity and its Discontents; Pathologies of the Modern Self. You may also choose optional modules from Warwick Business School.

Your third year will be spent abroad in Germany or Austria.

Fourth year core modules may include Modern German Language III and Business and Society in Contemporary Germany. Optional modules from German Studies may include The Writer and Imperial Germany 1871-1918; Post-war German Political Cinema; Reflections of National Socialism in Post-war German Writing; Berlin from 1900 to the Present Day; Reading Contemporary German Diasporic Writing; German Memories of WWII: From Perpetration to Suffering; The Self and the Others: Identity, Gender and Ethnicity in German Culture around 1800; Germany and the Holocaust: Interpretations and Debates; The Self and the Others II: Contemporary German Travel Narratives; Goethe's Faust; Kafka's Modernism; Boredom in the Literature and Film of the Berlin Republic. You may also choose optional modules from Warwick Business School.

How will I be assessed?

We will track your progress through language assignments, essays, presentations, portfolio submissions and examinations (written and oral). Throughout your course you will receive detailed, personalised feedback to help you to improve your skills.

What opportunities are there to study abroad?

You will spend a year of your course abroad, normally year 3, in a German-speaking country. We offer placements at carefully chosen partner institutions through the University’s study abroad scheme or through independent partnerships. It is also possible to work for the British Council as an English language assistant, or to set up an independent work placement.
