You will arrive with an A-level (or equivalent) in one of the two languages but the second language can be taken at either beginners or advanced level for German, beginners, intermediate or advanced for Italian.
You can spend your year abroad either in one country for the whole year, or you can split your time between a German-speaking country and Italy.

About this course
German and Italian is a joint degree which allows you to develop your knowledge and understanding of the language, literature, culture, society and politics of Italy and German-speaking countries, in both a historical and a contemporary perspective. Equal weight is given to both languages and cultures, and in each year four modules are taken: one module is devoted to each language and one further module is taken in each subject. Optional modules include the study of history, politics, literature, film and culture.
Our graduates work for organisations including: United Nations, the Ministry of Defence, British Airways, BBC Sussex, Nestle.
Examples of our graduates’ job roles include: Lead European marketer, Freelance translator & Editor, German Language Teacher, Project Controller, European Graduate trainee, Events Assistant.

Course programme
Year One
Students are required to take four year-long modules, two in German Studies and two in Italian Studies:
- Modern German Language I or Modern German Language for Beginners (30 credits)
- Modern Italian Language I (at Beginners', Intermediate or Advanced level) (30 Credits)
- Either Writers, Media and Society in Contemporary Germany or Aspects of German Culture in the Age of Enlightenment (30 credits)
- The History of Modern Italy (30 credits)
Year Two/Three
- Modern German Language II (30 credits) or
- Modern German Language II post-beginners (30 credits)
- IT201 Modern Italian Language II (30 credits) (pre-year abroad) or
- IT301 Modern Italian Language lII (30 credits) (post-year abroad)

You will have around 12 hours of contact time per week. We employ a variety of teaching styles, including: lectures; seminars of about 15 students, in which the emphasis is on student participation; and written and spoken language classes in small groups. You will spend the rest of your time studying independently, preparing for classes, reading the primary texts, writing essays and working on your language skills.
How will I be assessed?
We will track your progress through language assignments, essays, presentations, portfolio submissions and examinations (written and oral). Throughout your course you will receive detailed, personalised feedback to help you to improve your skills.
