A short induction at the beginning. You will look at the mandolin and its Folk repertoire, concentrating on developing speed and fluidity of fingering, alternate plectrum picking patterns and correct fingering. You will be introduced to playing single note melodies in 4/4, 6/8 and 3/4 time. Repertoire will centre around Folk Dance tunes (Jigs,Reels,Hornpipes,Waltzes etc) so learners will need to be interested in this genre of music. The course will focus on class ensemble playing and you will receive individual support from the tutor to help with this

About this course

This course is suitable for those who would like to begin or develop their playing of the mandolin.

You do not need any formal qualifications to do the course. No previous knowledge of the mandolin is required. You do not need to be able to read music however a basic understanding of mandolin tablature will be an advantage as will an appreciation of British and Irish Folk Dance Music.

Course programme

How will I learn?

You will learn through demonstrations, practical work with your instruments and listening to tunes whilst following them on music sheets and notation that will be provided.

How will my progress be monitored and assessed?

Your tutor will continually observe and support you and give you regular feedback about your progress. You will compile a simple portfolio as evidence of your learning

What equipment or materials will I need to provide?

A mandolin, a plectrum, an electronic tuner, pen/pencil, folder/file for your music.

What other support is available?

Help with numeracy or literacy is available. ICT drop-in sessions are available during term time and are open to all learners. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Learner Support Funding is available for equipment, childcare and travel to learners who qualify.
