About this course

This course is open to anyone who has a specific interest in writing poetry and would like to develop their understanding of the subject, their compositional skills, and their confidence in producing their own poems.

No previous knowledge is required.

How will I learn?

A mixture of small group discussions and interactive activities and individual tasks.

There is no formal assessment for this course, but you will receive continual feedback from your tutor and comments from your fellow class members.

What equipment or materials will I need to provide?

None, other than a pen and some paper.

What other support is available?

Help with numeracy or literacy is available. ICT drop-in sessions are available during term time and are open to all learners. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Learner Support Funding is available for equipment, childcare and travel to learners who qualify. For further details please ask when enrolling.

The topics covered include:

Ideas and inspiration for writing – poetry writing tasks and games.
The basic principles of poetry writing: using different forms, exploring metre and rhythm, experimenting with voice and sound effects.
