Our Global Health & Social Medicine BA offers a unique and exciting course with the opportunity to study abroad for a year and aims to train a new generation of leaders who want to make a difference in the world.
The course is designed for those who wish to understand the social determinants of health and illness in a global context, and to recognise and evaluate the range of medical and healthcare approaches.
Whether you want to promote responsible biomedical research, address global health inequities or ensure fairness across generations, you are required to consider numerous perspectives in order to succeed, fostering thinking across disciplines and national boundaries.

All applicants of our full time BSc or BA are eligible for the £9,000 scholarship opportunity, including UK, EU and Overseas students.
We offer excellent opportunities to study social aspects of health and medicine in a multi-disciplinary context with close collaboration between the social sciences, life sciences and biomedicine.

Please note that A-level General Studies, Critical Thinking, Thinking Skills and Global Perspectives are not accepted by King's as one of your A-levels. However, if offered the grade achieved may be taken into account when considering whether or not to accept a candidate who has just fallen short of the conditions of their offer.

Course programme
The course consists of a mixture of required and optional modules, and a research-based dissertation in the final year. Required modules are all taught from within the Department of Global Health & Social Medicine, which also offers optional modules in Years Two and Three.
Courses are divided into modules. Each year you will normally take modules totalling 120 credits.
King’s College London reviews the modules offered on a regular basis to provide upto-date, innovative and relevant courses of study. Therefore, modules offered may change. We suggest you keep an eye on this course page for updates.
Required ModulesYou are required to take the following modules:- Introduction To Global Health 1 (15 credits)
- Introduction To Global Health 2 (15 credits)
- Introduction to Social Medicine 1 (15 credits)
- Introduction to Social Medicine 2 (15 credits)
- Research Practice & Design Studio (30 credits)
- Foundations in Social Science and Social Theory (30 credits)
There are no optional modules in the first year of this course.
2nd Year
You are required to take the following modules:
- Key Concepts In Global Health (30 credits)
- Key Concepts in Social Medicine (30 credits)
- The Dissertation Laboratory (15 credits)
You are also required to take an approved optional module from the list below, and make up the rest of your credits with optional modules from the department.
- Applied Epidemiology and Social Statistics (15 credits)
- Case Studies in Global Health & Social Medicine (15 credits)
3rd Year
Global Health & Social Medicine BA:
If you are studying the three year BA, you will take the final year modules in your third year.
Required ModulesYou are required to take the following modules:
- Contemporary Crises in GHSM (15 credits)
- Dissertation in Global Health & Social Medicine (30 credits)
In addition, you are required to take 75 credits from a range of optional modules, which may typically include:
- Social Aspects of Genomics and Personalised Medicine (SAGEP) (15 credits)
- Ageing: a Global Perspective (15 credits)
- War, Mental Health & Social Ruptures (15 credits)
- Ethics of Emerging Biotechnologies (15 credits)
- Psychiatry, Culture and Globalisation (15 credits)
Global Health & Social Medicine with a Year Abroad BA:
Students on the four year course will spend their third year studying abroad before returning to complete a final year with King’s. This will depend on reaching a certain grade average and being accepted by a partner university.
