The goldbeater was a person whose profession consisted ofbeatwith a huge hammer the gold, reducing it to a very thin sheet of leaf (gold leaf); by inserting a grain of gold between two animal skins and beating vigorously on them, he reduced the gold or silver into sheets of a few microns thick. Gold, in particular, being the most malleable metal, is very suitable for being reduced to very thin sheets.
