The Graduate Certificate in Surgical Sciences comprises 24 credit points of units of study by coursework. It is intended for those who are interested in pursuing a career in surgery and successful application is subject to interview.
The coursework approach provides a pathway for medical graduates and advanced medical students to undertake study that will assist students in their preparation for the Generic Surgical Science Examination (GSSE) conducted by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). This course also gives students the opportunity to complete the Graduate Certificate of Surgical Sciences concurrently with their MD/MBBS.”
Advanced medical students (those entering year 3 and 4 of the Sydney Medical Program, or those enrolled in other graduate medical programs who have completed their preclinical science studies) are eligible to apply to enrol in 1 unit of study per semester and complete the Graduate Certificate at the same time as completing their medical program.
There are four compulsory units of study (6 credit points per unit):
1. Surgical Skills and Practical Professionalism ( Concord Hospital)
2. Physiology and Pharmacology for Surgeons (main campus)
3. Surgical Anatomy based on RACS GSSE (main campus)
4. Surgical Pathology (online)
