Course description, features and facilities This one-year course is for graduates aspiring to careers as secondary school teachers. Candidates must have a degree with a major in the subject that they wish to teach and which can be found in the school curriculum. The course aims to graduate highly skilled professionals who have the key practical skills required for effective secondary teaching, informed by current theory and research.
The final year the Graduate Diploma in Education will be be offered will be 2017. After 2017 only the Master of Teaching (Secondary) will be available. This is part of an Australian-wide effort to enhance graduate teaching standards. Applicants from 2015 to 2017 are encouraged to consider the Master of Teaching (Secondary).

Structure

Key to availability of units:
S1 = Semester 1; S2 = Semester 2; NS = non-standard teaching period



All units have a value of six points unless otherwise stated.


(1) Students must select one curriculum major or school psychology.

(2) A major comprises one Curriculum I unit and the corresponding Curriculum II unit.

(3) A minor comprises one Curriculum I unit.

(4) An area of interest comprises one Curriculum I unit from Group N.

(5) SSEH5464 Physical Education Curriculum I may only be completed as part of a major.

(6) All students are required to pass a test of Teacher Language and Numeracy Competency Skills.

(7)(a) Art, English, Information and Communication Technology, Languages Other than English (LOTE), Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences and Science majors: Students must take units to the value of 12 points from one curriculum major chosen from Groups A to G, units to the value of 6 points from one curriculum 1 unit chosen from Groups K or N and units to the value of 12 points form Group L.

(b) For students pursuing a single major in one of the following:

(i) Music major: Students must take to the value of 24 points from Group J and units to the value of 6 points from Group K, L or N. For students pursuing a minor in music, take units MUSC4711 and MUSC4712 to the value of 12 points form Group J, units to the value of 12 points from Group A–G and units to the value of 6 points form Group L or N.

(ii) Health and Physical Education major: Students must take units to the value of 24 points from Group I, and a unit to the value of 6 points from Group K, L or N.

(iii) School Psychology: Students must take all units from Group M to the value of 30 points.

(iv) TESOL major: Students must take corresponding units to the value of 18 points from Group H, a unit to the value of 6 points from Group K or N and a unit to the value of 6 points form Group L.

(c) For students pursuing a double major (course coordinator approval required), students must take two majors, each comprising a Curriculum I and a Curriculum II units, from Groups A to H (24 points) and one unit(s) to the value of 6 points from Group L.
