The Graduate Diploma in Military and Defence Studies draws from the courses integrated into the Australian Command and Staff Course (Joint) of the Australian Command and Staff College. The Graduate Diploma in Military and Defence Studies program requires the completion of 48 units, which must consist of:

48 units from completion of two of the following specialisations:

Australia and the Use of Force

Australian Defence Policy

Military Operations, Leadership and Command

Strategy and Operations



Entry requirements: To be eligible for admission to the GDipMilDefSt, applicants must be posted as course members to the Australian Command and Staff College.

Admission to the GDipMilDefSt requires a prior bachelor, graduate certificate or higher degree.

Prior learning will be recognised for admission in accordance with the ANU Policy: Credit Policy. Prior learning (formal, non-formal and in-formal) must be documented as part of the application. Candidates are eligible for admission if, in the judgement of the Delegated Authority, the totality of documented prior learning equates to the learning outcomes of a program sufficient for regular admission.

All applicants must meet the University’s English Language Admission Requirements for Students.
