Gunsmith or armourer is generically the one who sells, manufactures, repairs weapons of all kinds and armor. The art of the gunsmith is very ancient. In ancient times, since the gun was all hand-made, the name and person of the gunsmith was famous. In recent times, with the competition of machines, the names of the cities where the best factories were located have risen in fame. Thus in Italy the factories of Cremona, Brescia, Bergamo, Milan (Missaglia and Negroli above all), Venice, Naples (Torre Annunziata; Armstrong), Serravalle, Scarperia and Terni; in Spain those of Toledo and in Syria those of Damascus. They are followed by the most reputed of Sheffield and Birmingham in England, of Saint-Étienne and Klugenthal in France, of Essen (Krupp) in Germany. In the military personnel of some States the gunsmith is the non-commissioned officer who is in charge of the conservation and repair of small arms at the corps (excluding Artillery regiments). He depends on the armament officer for his special service. In 1912, the gunsmiths had been suppressed and the arming non-commissioned officers had been established in their stead, with similar duties. In 1914 the position of chief gunsmith non-commissioned officer was restored.
