Manual handling injuries are the main cause of lost working days in the UK. These injuries occur due to sprains and strains resulting from the incorrect lifting and movement of objects. In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and subsequent Regulations, it is the responsibility of all employers to provide employees with sufficient information and training on manual handling. Employees can gain a manual handling qualification through HABC to ensure you are compliant with the regulations and to minimise the costs you incur from work-related lifting injuries. By training an employee to achieve a manual handling qualification you have an effective way of ensuring that you have taken the necessary due diligence to ensure your staff are adequately trained.

Course programme

HABC Level 2 Award in Safe Moving and Handling – This award makes candidates aware of their responsibilities and gives them a good understanding of the principles of safe moving and lifting of loads One of the main injuries suffered in the workplace is back injury, and the majority are due to poor lifting techniques. Any job that involves heavy labour or manual material handling may include a high risk for injury on the job. Manual material handling entails lifting, but also usually includes climbing, pushing, pulling, and pivoting, all of which pose the risk injury to the back and spine poor manual handling in the workplace contributes to a large percentage of cases of musculoskeletal disorders reported annually in the UK. Musculoskeletal disorders often involve strains and sprains to the lower back, shoulders, and upper limbs. Potentially injurious tasks may involve bending and twisting, repetitive motions, carrying or lifting heavy loads, and maintaining fixed positions for a long time. Poor manual handling can lead to damaged muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels Therefore manual handling training can be an important aspect for both businesses and the health of individuals. A manual handling course relates to all aspects of lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying. This can be classed as an object (inanimate) or a person (animate). Both have risk factors associated to them that can lead to injury, and can result in time taken off work. Who needs this qualification? This course is suitable for employers as it is their responsibility to reduce the risk of injury through hazardous manual handling training. The resulting benefit for you is a healthy and happy workforce, and less cumulated sick leave. For any Individual who may feel that by enrolling on a manual handling course will help them develop new skills that can help protect their future health. Why is this training important? If poor lifting techniques are causing so many injuries and sick leave, then it makes sense to undertake training to counteract this imbalance. Manual handling training can help educate individuals and businesses, by teaching correct lifting techniques. Train Aid’s manual handling course can also help candidates understand why and how injuries happen, and identify risk factors to help stop injuries occurring.
