Health & Social Care - Progression Certificate (Adult BTEC First Diploma)

Course ID:
PC02344

Academy:
Health, Social Care & Early Years

Introduction:
This course acts as an introduction to health and social care work but is primarily aimed at people who wish to eventually gain entry to Higher Education (HE) to study Nursing, Midwifery or other health-related fields or, indeed Social Work or Youth & Community Work. The course will also enhance an employment profile. As such, this is a first entry academic route into HE. It is particularly aimed at Adult learners who would like to progress to University but who do not have the relevant qualifications to enter usually because they have had a break in education or have chosen a new career path.

Study Mode & Location:
This one year Part-Time+ course will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St. Vincent's Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
The units you will study are as follows:

  • Individual Needs Within the Health & Social Care Sectors.
  • Communication and Individual Rights within the Health & Social Care Sectors.
  • The Impact of Diet on Health
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Health & Social Care.
  • Working in the Health & Social Care Sectors.
  • Human Lifespan Development.

In addition, GCSE English and Key Skills Level 2 Application of Number will be studied. If the latter have already been successfully achieved, the learner will be aided in finding alternatives from the College-wide curriculum offer.

We try, where possible, to engage in out-of-College activities and also aim to bring guest speakers into College. It is CRUCIAL that you understand the volume of work required and the level of commitment to achieve the qualification and, as such, you need to allow for considerable time spent on private study if you are to be successful on the course.

Assessment:
Assignments will be continuous throughout the course in the form of written work and presentations with opportunities given to upgrade at various parts in the year. In the case of Key Skills level 2 Application of Number and GCSE English, examinations will be undertaken as well as assignment work.

Subject Tutors will give assistance in scheduled timetabled slots in all areas of assessment and Curriculum Studies is also built into the course timetable to provide help on a weekly basis. Each learner will also have access to a Personal Learning Adviser in weekly Tutorial slots.

Careers & Progression Opportunities:
This course will develop your confidence and enhance your profile in terms of future employment. It acts as a first stepping stone on to the Access to HE Diplomas and then on to the Diploma in Nursing and degrees in Nursing and Midwifery and other degrees such as Physiotherapy, Radiography, Occupational Therapy, Complementary and Alternative Medicine or Health Studies. Some learners have studied for the Diploma in Operating Department Practice. A further consideration may be the Foundation Degree in Integrated Education and Care of Children and Young People which can be studied at Preston College. This course may also improve employment prospects in the field of voluntary and private care agencies as well as within Social Services and health care.
