Course programme

The Workplace Health & Safety - Level 2 Course is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of principles and practice of health & safety in the workplace.

This course will be suited to anyone who needs to gain a practical understanding of their role and responsibility for health & safety. No prior knowledge is required.

On successful completion on this course students will receive an accredited Level 2 Certificate of Achievement.

Objectives:

  • Describe the legal framework within which workplace health & safety operates.

  • Explain control systems for ensuring health & safety is properly managed.

  • Analyse policy and practice in relation to workplace health.

  • Analyse policy & practice in relation to workplace safety.

  • Analyse policy & practice in relation to workplace welfare.

The course is split into the following 5 Units:

  • Unit One – Introduction to Workplace Health & Safety

The following topics are covered: Accidents in the workplace, Why workplace health & safety is important, The legal framework, Enforcement.

  • Unit Two – Workplace Health & Safety Management Systems

The following topics are covered: Risk assessment, Health and safety information instruction training and supervision, Consulting with workers, Appointed representatives, Health & Safety committees, Health & Safety policies, Health & Safety budgets, RIDDOR.

  • Unit Three – Workplace Health

The following topics are covered: Comfortable working condition, Smoking, Alcohol drugs and substance abuse, COSHH, Manual Handling, First Aid, New and expectant mothers, Young people, People with disabilities, Health Surveillance.

  • Unit Four – Workplace Safety

The following topics are covered: Clean working condition, Suitable and safe working equipment, Preventing slipping and tripping, transparent and translucent surfaces, Windows, skylights, ventilators, doors and gates, Safety of escalators and walkways, Fire safety, Electrical safety, PPE.

  • Unit Five – Workplace Welfare

The following topics are covered: Legal requirements, Toilets and washing facilities, Drinking water, Meal breaks, Rest facilities, Changing and storing clothing, Working time.

Prerequisites:

There are no particular entry requirements.

Course Duration & Support:

Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. You also have access to a personal tutor by mail or email for a 12 month period. As the course is self study you can complete in as little or as long a time as you prefer.

Assessment:

You will be assessed on coursework which is detailed in the course materials. Most coursework consists of short paragraph answers to set questions, and a larger essay/case study assignment. Your work can be sent back to your course tutor by email or by post.

Certification:

On successful completion of this course students will receive a Workplace Health & Safety Certificate of Achievement by ABC Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details of all the units you have completed as part of your course).

The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future. The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 2 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner.
