About this course

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above is required plus three other GCSE’s at grade 4 (C) or above .

Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

Course programme

Year 1

Although topics may be subject to change learners will study a mix of core units, option units and two exams in their first year. Units include topics such as: human lifespan development, infection prevention and control , psychological perspectives, working in health and social care, anatomy and physiology. There is also a research project enquiries into current research in health and social care (external Synoptic) that will run over the two year course. Grading uses the Pass to Distinction* grade, which is equivalent to A* to C grade.

Year 2

Although topics may be subject to change learners will study a mix of core units, option units and two exams in their second year. Units include: meeting individual care and support needs, principles of safe practice in health and social care, promoting public health, understanding mental health and well being. Working in health and social care and anatomy and physiology are both exam based units. Grading uses the Pass to Distinction* grade, which is equivalent to A* to C grade.

Additional information

Today’s BTEC Nationals are demanding. For this course you will have to be organised, adhering to your deadlines and keeping a portfolio of your assignments. There are 4 externally assessed units (exams) over the two years of the course. The remainder of your qualification will be assessed internally by a variety of methods that may include a practical, essays and/or presentations.
