Course programme

  • Work based experience in years one and two of the programme.

Year 1 (Level 4)

The first year of the programme introduces you to concepts relevant to all areas of health and social care but in more depth than you may have previously studied. Students consider the idea of vulnerability – who is vulnerable, how and why? Having learned about different ways of viewing the notions of ‘health’ and ‘illness’ you will also look at the idea of mental health and mental illness from a range of perspectives, addressing issues such as stigma and recovery. With poor communication being cited in many complaints relating to health and social care, the ‘Communicating and Interacting’ module will help you to refine your verbal and written communication and understand how to meet the needs of people who may not be able to express themselves effectively.

Year 2 (Level 5)

Building on the fundamental skills in the first year, the second year will equip you with a broader understanding of your practice. Through the 'Engagement for Wellbeing' module you will gain the knowledge and skills needed to help people to stay well and prevent illness using a range of contemporary and creative strategies, whilst Research Foundations will help you to understand how to interpret and build on the evidence base which underpins your practice.
