Course programme

Preparation for a vocational career in caring services is the emphasis of this course. If you are successful, this is a suitable qualification for you to progress on to a range of further study at level 2, at the College.

Students progressing onto the level 2 programme will need to undergo a Criminal Records Bureau check to assess their suitability to undertake work experience in health, social care and early year settings. (Please note: you will be required to contribute towards the administration costs of the DBS check.)

It can also be used as a stepping-stone into employment in the health and social care sector where some previous experience is necessary to gain initial employment.

You will study a range of units including:

  • communicating effectively
  • factors affecting health
  • social/emotional needs
  • creative and leisure activities
  • personal care in health and social care
  • job opportunities in health and social care/childcare
  • rights and responsibilities at work.

Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:

  • the qualification you are studying
  • English and maths
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.
