Course programme

What qualifications do I need?

You need to have four GCSEs at Grades D or above, to include a C in English or a BTEC Level 1 Diploma, and a suitable standard of literacy. Mature students with relevant work or life experience may not need to fulfil entry requirements, as long as they can demonstrate they are academically capable of working at this level. All applicants will require a DBS (formerly CRB) check and need to have a successful interview.

What’s involved?

Between 11- 13 units will be studied, based around practical skills and key areas:

• Mandatory units include Human Lifespan Development, Values in Health and Social Care, Communication, Equality, Diversity and Health Living
• Optional specialist units include Vocational Experience, Creative and Therapeutic Activities and Introduction to Dementia.

As part of your study programme you will study Maths, English or Employability qualificatins at a suitable level.

You will have 110 hours of work placement.

How will I be studying?

You will complete written and practical activities, take part in discussions and role play, participate in work experience, as well as taking part in enrichment activities, such as visits to social care environments.

Most assessment is based on course work. 12% of course will be assessed via external exam.

Where can I move on to after this course?

On successful completion of the BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care course you can move straight onto work in a health and social care setting, or you may be considered for progression onto a Level 3 course such as Health and Social Care or Childcare and Education. Mature students could apply to join the Level 3 Access to Higher Education course or move into employment.
