Course programme
You will need a broad education and preferably five GCSEs Grade A* - C, including English. Students with a relevant Level 2 qualification may be considered. Mature applicants with relevant work or life experience may not need to fulfill entry requirements, as long as they can demonstrate that they are academically capable of working at this level.
You will also need a successful interview. All applicants will require a DBS check.
What’s involved?You will be studying a wide range of units:
- Core units include Developing Effective Communications, Equality, Diversity and Rights, Health, Safety and Security, Anatomy and Physiology, Psychology and Sociology
- You will also study a selection of specialist topics including Caring for Children and Young People, Safeguarding Adults and Promoting Independence, Values and Planning, Dementia, Nutrition.
- You will go on work placements in a variety of settings over the two years such as schools, nurseries, day centres, care homes, housing associations, hospitals and hospices.
- As part of your study programme you will complete Maths, English or Employability qualifications at a suitable level.
Students will also complete up to 148 hours in work placement per year.
How will I be studying?You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic work situations and activities. You will also be developing the wide range of valuable skills you need to start a career or progress onto Higher Education.
Where can I move on to after this course?On successful completion of the Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care you can choose to use the qualification to progress on to university, for degrees in areas such as nursing, midwifery, social work, social welfare, psychology, counselling. These qualifications are also valued by employers in areas such as care homes, day centres, children’s centres, primary care trusts, housing, community work, domestic violence and a wide range of voluntary sectors.
